Summer is just around the corner which means more time in the sun! Being outside has plenty of benefits to your health, but as we all know it also puts us at risk of skin cancer. The most common spots for skin cancer to form are your scalp, nose, ears, and lips as these are the most exposed areas to the sun year round. Pay extra attention to these areas especially when you will be outside for a prolonged period of time. Here are our Top 4 Skin Care Prevention Tips to help you stay safe year round.
Did you know that even a short commute in your car to work is exposing you to UV rays? That’s why whether you are planning to be outside or not, we recommend applying sunscreen to any exposed areas (face, neck, chest, hands) every single morning. We love the brand EltaMD which has a variety of body, face, and lip sunscreens! If you aren’t already using a lip balm with sunscreen, this is your sign to start.
A wide brimmed hat and UV protection sunglasses are a must have when being out in the sun. You may also consider lightweight long sleeves or pants for additional coverage when possible.
Annual skin checks are necessary to help detect skin cancer in early stages. Your dermatologist may recommend more frequent visits based on your health history or concerning moles they want to monitor. If you’re in need of a doctor in the Chicagoland area, we recommend Pinnacle Dermatology. In between visits with your professional, keep an eye on any changes in your skin. Christmas Without Cancer proudly supports the local nonprofit March4Meg, which is dedicated to combating melanoma by raising awareness, providing educational resources, and generating funds for the melanoma program at Advocate Christ Medical Center through the Meg Moonan Endowment. This wonderful organization also provides free skin screenings year-round. We encourage you to follow their social media channels to stay informed about these opportunities.
Why tanning beds are still a thing, we will never understand, but do yourself a favor and avoid them at all costs! We also don’t recommend laying in the real sun for a tan either. Should you want a little glow to your skin, opt for a self tan option instead. We hope you find these tips helpful in staying safe in the sun! Thanks for reading along and stay tuned for our next blog. With Love, The Christmas Without Cancer Team
