The Lonely Road of Cancer
Having a strong support system while battling cancer is crucial to your health.
A cancer diagnosis can turn your world upside down in many ways. As most people expect, there are physical, financial, and emotional strains that one endures while battling cancer. One strain that isn’t always predicted is social isolation. Unfortunately, battling cancer can be quite the lonely road. Your loved ones that you once relied on can suddenly feel distant.
A Shift In Support
At first, a cancer diagnosis often comes with a wave of love and support from those around you. Friends, family, and coworkers offer words of encouragement through texts, calls, and in-person chats. As time goes on you may notice a shift. Your schedule becomes busier with doctor visits, treatments, and rest. And their schedules move on in a different direction with their check-ins becoming less and less frequent.
This may not always be intentional, but it can be hard to not take it personally. Some people don’t know what to say while others may assume you’re “doing better”. This shift leaves you feeling forgotten during one of the hardest seasons in your life.
Support Groups
One impactful way to combat isolation is through cancer support groups. These groups connect you with people who truly understand the hardship you are going through. Support groups provide a safe space to share your ups and downs of cancer without any sort of judgement or explanation needed.
Whether in person or online, support groups can help remind you that you are not alone. Hearing others’ vulnerability through walking a similar path that you are on offers comfort, reassurance that your feelings are valid, and oftentimes advice. You may even make lifelong connections through these shared experiences of the members in your support group.
Counseling
Professional counseling is another valuable form of support during a cancer journey or any hardship for that matter. Ask your healthcare team for recommendations on a counselor near you that perhaps specializes in cancer patients. Their expertise will help you navigate the sense of loss and loneliness that often accompanies cancer.
Counseling also offers a private space where you can speak openly and feel heard. A place where you don’t feel alone and can be completely vulnerable.
