Studies have shown that a strong support system positively impacts someone’s cancer journey.  Cancer can be very isolating which is a health hazard in and of itself!  It’s crucial that no one feels alone during their battle and is surrounded by people they can count on. A support person helps to reduce stress and anxiety as well as provide emotional and practical support.

Here at Christmas Without Cancer, we’ve identified our TOP 5 TIPS FOR SUPPORTING A LOVED ONE BATTLING CANCER.

1. CALLS & TEXTS

While calls & texts may sound simple to do, it is the intention that we must get better at. Think about it…When was the last time you sent a text to check on someone’s well-being?  Alternate texts with supportive and lighthearted messaging.

Text message ideas:

  • Motivational quotes
  • Prayers
  • Thinking of you
  • Funny memes / jokes
  • Photo memories

Texts are great, but a phone call is even more special.  With the technology of social media and texting, phone calls have significantly reduced.  For some, calls have become almost extinct.  A phone call allows another level of connection than a text message.  Calls provide a sense of value, engagement, and intimacy.

2. RUN ERRANDS

Tasks such as picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy or getting groceries can be an exhausting and sometimes impossible task to those under treatment.  From experience, we’ve seen patients not want to ask for help.  Don’t wait for them to ask. Instead, tell them how you are going to help.  Be persistent.  The relief they will feel from the genuineness and not feeling like a burden is huge.

3. SPEND QUALITY TIME

Life as a cancer patient is much different than pre-cancer life.  Cancer causes one to have less energy and more restrictions.  What cancer doesn’t change is the need for quality time with loved ones.  That quality time may look different now, but it’s even more important now than ever before.

Quality time ideas:

  • Attend treatment
  • Watch movies
  • Spend time outside
  • Cook them a meal
  • Build a puzzle

4. ATTEND FUNDRAISERS

Christmas Without Cancer has events year-round where cancer patients, cancer survivors, loved ones, and more all come together.  This community that has been built and continues to evolve is something special to be a part of.  Whether you attend alone or with someone battling cancer, this is a great way to show your support.

5. MAIL A CARD / PACKAGE

Live far, but still want to show your support?  Mail a handwritten card or send a care package to your loved one battling cancer.  This is another act of kindness that is almost extinct, making it that much more special when it does happen.  We love this set of uplifting, ‘thinking of you’ cards on Amazon found here.  For care packages, we suggest items such as a cozy blanket, fuzzy socks, nausea drops, favorite snack, and/ or a book.  We will have a separate blog all about Care Package Essentials coming soon!

We know being a support system for someone battling cancer isn’t easy, but boy are they lucky to have a kind soul like you!  Thanks for reading along. Stay tuned for our next blog.
